LIFE ONBOARD

Onboard SULTANA you will be immersed in a forgotten way of life where sailors live in close harmony with the environment and daily routines are largely determined by the wind and weather. A total of 16 people will be onboard SULTANA during any given trip, including nine student participants and up to seven professional instructors. During your trip you will work alongside your fellow crew to learn how to handle, navigate and sail SULTANA. You will also work with SULTANA’s experienced instructors, undertaking a variety of activities to learn about the ecosystem of the Chesapeake and the organisms that live there. There are also plenty of opportunities to go ashore, swim, play games, fish, and have fun!

Healthy meals are prepared three times a day by the vessel’s cook and eaten family-style in a communal setting. At night, students sleep under the stars or down below in the vessel’s main hold. In the middle of every trip, Sultana visits a port such as Oxford or Annapolis, where participants have an opportunity to explore historic sites and take advantage of modern conveniences such as flushing toilets and showers. Young sailors in Sultana’s summer programs should be prepared for life in a shipboard environment where the accommodations are basic, space is limited, electronic devices are forbidden, and teamwork is essential!
