From July 6 – 31, 2009, Sultana Projects will conduct a series of five day, four night live-aboard programs as part of the Maryland State Department of Education's “Summer Centers Program for Gifted and Talented Students.” These unique programs provide students with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study colonial and maritime history while exploring the waters of the Chesapeake Bay aboard the 1768 reproduction schooner Sultana. Coursework focuses on Maryland's colonial period, with a particular emphasis on the decade preceding the American Revolution. Students are trained in the techniques of 18th century sailing and navigation, examine time period surgical tools and armaments, read and decipher excerpts from the original logs of Sultana's commanding officers, and study nautical charts of the Chesapeake Bay and its tidal tributaries. Participants also go ashore to explore creeks and marshes, conduct tests to monitor water quality, and analyze eyewitness accounts of 18th century fisheries. Over the course of the week, students use primary and secondary sources to complete a research project on the life of one of Sultana's historic crewmembers. This program is open to rising 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in the state of Maryland.
For additional information about this program please contact the Sultana office or visit the Maryland State Department of Education Gifted and Talented Programs.
